Als nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg die ersten modernen Kirchenbauten in Deutschland entstanden, galt die Fotografie als das zeitgemäße Medium für die Verbreitung von neuer Architektur. Auch die traditionsreiche Bauaufgabe wurde vor allem über foto- grafische Bilder vermittelt, die es ermöglichten, die Aktualität der neuen Formensprache zu belegen. Iris Metje untersucht in ihrem Buch den Umgang bedeutender Architekten - wie Rudolf Schwarz oder Otto Bartning - mit dem Bildmedium sowie die Rolle wichtiger Fotografen - etwa Albert Renger-Patzsch und Hugo Schmölz - für die Inszenierung moderner Kirchenbauten, aber rückt auch heute vergessene Fotografen wieder in den Blickpunkt. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage: Welchen Einfluss hatte die Bauaufgabe auf die Architekturfotografie, auf ihre Gestaltungs- und Verbreitungsweisen?
